I just learned that Grand Theft Auto 5 requires an 8 GB install whether youre buying it for Xbox 360 or PS3. I hadnt realized this until now (though the information has been out for a while), and felt I should share for anyone else who may missed the initial announcement as well. The 360 version of the game comes on two discs, one for installation, the other for gameplay. The PS3 version is on one Blu-ray which has it all, but the same install is still required.
This may not be a big deal to those with newer consoles that have massive hard drives, but for some 360 owners with 4 GB or 8 GB models, external storage is required. Rockstar specifically addresses this point in an FAQ:
If using a USB flash drive it must be at least USB 2.0 with a minimum 15mb/s read speed and formatted for Xbox 360 use. A new USB flash drive is recommended to ensure optimum performance.
And dont buy a cheap 8 GB flash drive thinking it will be enough, because useable storage is always less than advertised. Do they even make flash drives that small anymore?
This also applies to me, as I got my 360 near launch, and though Ive gone through four of them due to red rings, its still that 20GB hard drive which has been permanently full of DLC for years now. It seems like for every new bit of content I download, I have to delete two other pieces beforehand. And I certainly dont have room for a 8 GB install, at least not without erasing half of my entire hard drive.
I figured this might happen ahead of time, so Im picking up the game for my PS3 which still has a couple hundred GB to spare, as it was purchased only a few years ago. I actually find myself buying most of my games for PS3 these days due to the fact that I dont want to play hard drive Tetris to get future DLC or on-disc installs to fit on my Xbox 360, and also the console now sounds like a harrier jet struggling to take off when Im playing it.
Its nothing against the 360 of course. Its just an old unit and obviously I could swap it out for a newer, sleeker version if I so chose. My PS3 has the benefit of being refined over the years which means a huge hard drive and a cooling system that doesnt sound like theres an airboat under my TV.
Both the Xbox One and PS4 have 500 GB hard drives, which sounds like a lot, but I have to wonder how much space that is, really. Theres going to be a huge push for digital downloads of games, despite the fact that both systems will play discs, and 500 GB can fill up fast. Sure, thats a lot of songs and movies on a computer, but games? Especially games the size of those in the next generation? Im wondering how big the download and installs are going to be. 500 GB may start to feel puny, and perhaps well see 2 TB models of each system a few years from now, the way we saw storage space multiply with their predecessors. In the future, an 8 GB install for GTA V will feel like a drop in the bucket.
